Barahonda 2011 is synergy: the creation of a whole that is greater than the simple sum of its parts.

The Yecla region in southeastern Spain has hot, dry summers that are ideal for the late-ripening Monastrell grape. Low rainfall and the temperature variation between night and day contribute to slow ripening, intense color, flavor and aroma concentration.

Monastrell is a rich, dark, fruit-driven red wine with meaty, herby and distinctive aromas and with strong tannins.  Blending Monastrell with another Spanish favorite varietal, robust black grape Syrah, with flavors and aromas of blackcurrant, licorice with strong tannins and distinctive black pepper on the palate creates a mouthwatering, balanced wine with all of your favorite aromas and flavors that you love in Spanish wine.

The synergy of this blend is truly a gift for the palate! This is a sexy wine!

It is quite floral, spicy and muscular with a well-developed full body you can see in the glass and taste on the palate. Fragrances of dark, ripe blackberries rich with spiciness and a generous touch of licorice and minerality from the limestone, clay and sandy soils. A sturdy backbone of tannins with a hint of smokiness creates a wine that is big, bold, aromatic and luscious all at the same time!

A Pairing for You!

Here is a leisurely meal for the weekend with Spanish Paella filled with chicken, shrimp and mussels with bold spices including smoked paprika and saffron.  Home-smoked briny olives (ask me how!) served with Spanish cheeses are the perfect tapas to complete this wine pairing dream!

From the Mendoza region in Argentina, this elegant Malbec Antucura 2012 emerges as a beautiful velvety, medium-bodied and expressive wine with a burst of fresh and juicy strawberries. A touch of juicy and tart blackberries with a peppery finish shows a pure expression of the Malbec varietal. The balance of acidity, fruitiness and a hint of black pepper and aromas of floral white flowers makes it a great wine for pairing, too.

Although the Malbec grape was once only a blending grape in Bordeaux, it has come into its own today as a very popular wine that is enjoyed by everyone for sipping or pairings.

Antucura Malbec 2012 is an all-weather wine. Drink now with hearty meals of Osso Bucco or oven roasted meats of beef and chicken. As the weather gets warmer Antucura 2012 will be just the wine for grilled burgers, steaks and ribs.

Lisa’s Wine Pairings: Antucura Malbec 2012 with rich and succulent Veal Osso Bucco in a veal and port demi-glace on top of creamy, mashed cauliflower with goat cheese and roasted garlic. This is lovely meal for any week night dinner or an elegant weekend dinner with friends.

This Italian Rosé Wine Pairs with Summertime! Molino a Vento Rosato 2013

Hey Nashville, what are you drinking this summer?

SummertimeIMG_8216 2

I’m obsessed with rosés this summer, so this wine recommendation came easily. Rosés are no longer one-dimensional, sweet and forgettable.

Molino a Vento Rosé 2013 is a fresh, uncomplicated rosato from Sicily made from 100% Nero d’Avola, the black grape of Sicily. It’s light rose/pink color is clean and bursting with red and black fruit flavors of juicy cherries and raspberries. This invigorating wine pairs with a variety of foods especially those from the grill such as chicken, tuna or salmon along with fresh, crisp fruit or vegetable-based salads.

Rosés are especially food friendly. They have the acidity of crisp white wines yet the fruitiness of red wines with red and dark berry flavors and aromas.

Having the opportunity this summer to taste examples that are soft, balanced and elegant, I recommend stocking up and sipping before the summer comes to an end!

You can find this mouth-watering Sicilian rosé at Grand Cru Wine and Spirits for around $10. Serve chilled!

Molino a Vento Rosato 2013 is imported by my friends at 100% Italiano Wines.
